Graduate Job Difficulties

Employers receiving 49 graduate applications for each vacancy

Almost 50 graduates are scrabbling for every job with leading employers with the number of vacancies down by a quarter on this time last year.

Generation Y, which has earned a reputation for being picky and demanding, may have to lower its sights, a survey indicates.

The research, presented today by the Association of Graduate Recruiters at its annual conference in Cardiff, found that the number of vacancies had suffered an “unprecedented fall”.

One in eight top companies had more than 150 applications for each graduate job this year, and the average was 49 — compared with 30 last year.

Most employers predicted there would be no improvement in the situation next year.

The biannual survey of 226 graduate recruiters, including Google, Bank of England, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Clifford Chance, Rolls-Royce, Sainsbury’s, Barclays, and Slaughter and May, found the average starting salary was frozen at £25,000.

The hardest-hit sectors for recruitment are investment banking, IT, construction and engineering. Vacancies in IT are down 45 per cent on last year, and by 40 per cent in engineering.

Companies told researchers that the quality of applications was up on last year.

The report adds: “Retention, which has previously been a major challenge for employers of graduates, has predictably been less of an issue this year as flighty Generation Y has its wings clipped by the recession.”

Graduates also appear to be more flexible and adaptable this year, and less resistent to relocating within the company. Employers are demanding higher academic standards.

The report says: “Three organisations specifically stated that their educational criteria are increasing to 2:1 and above, while others refer to raising the academic bar higher in order to manage increased application levels.”

Growing numbers of employers are relying on psychometric testing to assess candidates, with two thirds now using it.

Many are also introducing motivation questionnaires, to weed out despairing graduates applying for roles in which they have little interest, just to get a job.

Carl Gilleard, chief executive of the association, said that some graduates would have to adjust their sights downwards, and that it was better to take any job than be unemployed.

He said: “I wish we had better news to announce today but we cannot hide from the fact that dramatic vacancy cuts will make the job search very tough for graduates both this year and probably next year too.

“However, it is important to look at this in context and to point out that very few employers have abandoned their graduate recruitment programmes altogether and most are likely to reinstate recruitment levels at the first sign of an upturn in the economy.

“There are still opportunities out there for those who do their research and focus on quality rather than quantity of applications.

Sonja Stockton, head of recruitment at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said: “Graduates need to be open-minded and flexible about the options available to them. If they want an opportunity to kickstart their career, they need to be rigorous in their applications — dedicate time to research the organisation, and accurately reflect their academic achievement and skills.”

Jobs in Cardiff Doom and Gloom for Graduates of 2009?

Experts are predicting doom and gloom for those graduating in the summer 2009 writes Joanne Babbage, employment producer at BBC News.

However it is not just 2009 graduates who are in trouble

Official figures from the Office for National Statistics, specially analysed for the BBC, show that 36,000 students who graduated in 2008 were still unemployed in the first quarter of 2009.

That figure makes up just over 12% of all those who graduated in 2008.

Add to that all those in temporary and part time jobs and you've already got tens of thousands of educated youngsters chasing a shrinking graduate jobs market.

That compares to an unemployment rate for all young people between 18 and 24 of 16.1% in the three months to the end of March, a sharp increase from 12.6% just one year ago.

Experts indeed predict there will be a 5% drop in jobs for new graduates this summer.

What should graduates do?

So, what about the advice given by Carl Gilleard, the chief executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters?

He is on record saying they should lower their sights and that "almost any work is better than not working at all".

Ian Craig, a journalism graduate from Cardiff University, has accepted a job where a degree is not a requirement.

However, he is worried that his job as a bank cashier is ruining his career prospects.

"I got the job through a temping agency after I'd applied for hundreds of graduate schemes and got absolutely nowhere. This was only meant to be a stop-gap but eleven months later I'm still here," he says.

The role is full time so it means Ian cannot do any unpaid work experience in his chosen field.

Journalism is an industry notorious for giving people work experience on the job for little or no cash.

"I feel like I'm in a Catch-22 situation. I can't afford to give up this job but if I don't give up the job I won't be able to get any journalism experience," he adds.

"It's all well and good telling graduates to take any work but what happens when it gets in the way of pursuing the career you actually studied for?"

Graduate discrimination?

Some graduates might argue that Ian is one of the lucky ones.

At least he is earning some money and gaining valuable work experience, even if it is not in his chosen career.

Hayley Thomas from Port Talbot has just decided to stop claiming Jobseekers Allowance despite still being jobless. She is fed up of feeling like just another unemployment statistic by a system she says is not designed to cater for graduates.

With news that the U.K. economy shrank 1.9% (the biggest three-month decline in GDP since the third quarter of 1979.) in the first three months of 2009 and that the contraction was much worse than had been expected, its looking like the UK jobs market won't recover as soon as had been hoped. So what kind of jobs can you do that are part time to keep money ticking over?

Become a Gardener, with summer fast approaching home owners will be looking to clear up their gardens whether it be weeding, mowing the lawn or trimming the hedges, there are plenty of manual labour jobs around the garden that you can do with out having to have any particular gardening knowledge.

With asking prices for properties in Swansea increasing by 11.8% since March and Cardiff prices up by 3.1% (according to Rightmove.co.uk) the property market looks like it might be turning the corner. This means that homeowners in Cardiff will be looking for handymen in Cardiff, to help with painting or DIY around a new house.

Although the current economic climate means that it is not the best time for pubs and bars, bars still are looking for bar staff.

Find a Job In Cardiff, Interview Tips

In these challenging economic times the jobs market has become increasingly competitive. We spoke to the one of the graduate programme directors on the Unilever Graduate Leadership Programme and asked them what they looked for during their final assessment days. Hopefully these tips below may help you to find and get that job in Cardiff.

If the job you are applying for is not degree specific the company will be looking for the way you interpret and use the information presented to you through out the day. You should therefore not worry about your lack of marketing experience for example.

You may have stated that you were a team player when you applied for that Cardiff based job, however the company will want to see it in any group exercise you undertake. So if you find there is one person in the group who is not getting a chance to contribute ask them what they think. Also compliment others on the business points made and see if there is anything that you can add to them.

If you have to do a presentation exercise make sure that the points are either clearly laid out or viewable in the form of a flip chart or piece of paper. This will help you assessor to take in all that you are trying to get across.

Be passionate in your interview if you can get across how enthusiastic you are about things that you have enjoyed in your life the interviewer will appreciate it.

When asked to provide examples of when you have achieved something do not forget to pull upon any experiences you may have gained when working in part time, temporary or full time jobs. If you can bend one of these examples to help provide evidence to back up an answer in an interview it will benefit you.

Make sure you know in your mind why you want the job that has been advertised, why did you apply for it and what skills do you think you could bring to it.

The recession and the Cardiff jobs market

"Cardiff city centre stores saw a 1% fall in sales compared to January 2008, in yet another gloomy confirmation of the current recession. This contrasted with a 0.7% rise across the UK as a whole."writes Dominic Jones of the South Wales Echo(21/02/2009)

With the UK now in a recession the question arises what will happen to the jobs market in Cardiff? From the above information it is clear that Cardiff is suffering worse than others. Panasonic has recently announced that it intends to cut 70 jobs in Cardiff and L&G have cited the need for job cuts in Cardiff. With the news that the recession has lasted longer than expected and Britains GDP seeing a decrease of 1.9%. the Cardiff jobs market is going to have a difficult year with undoubtedly more rendundancies occuring over the course of the year.

However it is not all doom and gloom for Cardiff;

Cardiff & Co’s managing Director, Richard Thomas states that

"In the economic prosperity index, Cardiff performs well, ranked 15th of the 64 cities surveyed, ahead of Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and Glasgow. The capital fares even better, placed ninth, in the built environment index, reflecting the significant investment in the city. The strengthening of our infra- structure in the estimated £2.4bn regeneration of Cardiff Bay, the iconic Millennium Stadium and Wales Millennium Centre, and the £675m St David’s 2 shopping centre should provide the city with a platform for economic recovery. Our assets will be further strengthened this summer with the opening of a state-of-the-art stadium, befitting Cardiff City’s aspirations for top-flight football and the Blues rugby team, who remain unbeaten in Europe’s Heineken Cup."

With it seemingly impossible to say when Wales will be hit the 'bottom' of the recession the availability of jobs may carry on decreasing until those infamous "green shoots" re appear.
